Video 3 - Value/Action Gap

Welcome back, everyone! I'm Danielle Hagerty. In our previous videos, we explored what values are and why they're so important right now. Today, we're tackling a common challenge: how to actually live by our values. Because, let's face it, knowing our values is one thing, but living them? That's where it gets interesting.

We call this challenge the "value-action gap." It's like having a map to buried treasure but never picking up the shovel to dig. Frustrating, right? Well, today we're going to build a bridge over that gap.

Let's start with a quick exercise. Think about one of your core values. Got it? Now, think about the last time you made a decision that directly aligned with that value. Was it easy? Was it recent? If you're finding this tricky, you're not alone.

Life has a way of throwing curveballs at us. Maybe you value health, but that box of donuts in the break room is calling your name. Or you cherish family time, but work keeps creeping into your evenings and weekends. Sound familiar?

The thing is, it's about something other than being perfect. It's about being aware and making conscious choices. Let's break this down with a real-life example.

Meet Sarah. She values creativity and family. However, her day job involves spreadsheets, and she often works late. How can Sarah bridge her value-action gap?

First, she could look for small ways to inject creativity into her work – maybe by suggesting a brainstorming session or redesigning a presentation. She might discuss her needs with her boss and set a firm cut-off time for work three days a week for family time.

See what Sarah did there? She found ways to align her actions with her values without making drastic changes. She also shared it with her manager so he could support her new behavior. That's key. It's not about overhauling your entire life overnight.

Now it's your turn. In the comments, share one small action you could take to better align with one of your values. Remember, think small and doable!

Another crucial point is staying flexible. Life isn't black and white, and neither is living your values. It's okay if you only sometimes get it right. The goal is progress, not perfection. The same concept that helps you improve in sports and yoga can also help you improve your mental fitness.

Let's say you value environmental sustainability, but you forgot your reusable bag at the grocery store. Don't beat yourself up! Instead, think about how you can remember it next time. Leave it by the door or in your car.

This brings us to an important concept: values are a compass, not a cage. They should guide you, not restrict you.

Sometimes, different values compete with each other. You might value both career success and family time. The key is finding the mix that feels right for you.

Here's a question: Have you ever felt torn between two values? How did you handle it? Feel free to share your experiences in the comments.

Now, let's talk about a powerful tool for bridging the value-action gap: mindfulness. Being present in the moment can help you make choices that align with your values.

Try this: Next time you're making a decision, big or small, take a deep breath. Ask yourself, "Does this align with my values?" Just that moment of pause can make a big difference. In fact, let’s pause right now and share our favorite breathing technique. For example, mine is a 4-count inhale - 4-count hold - 8-count exhale. Share what works for you in the comments.

As we wrap up, remember this: bridging the value-action gap is a journey. Some days, you'll nail it; others, you might stumble. And that's okay. What matters is that you're trying.

Our next video will address some common roadblocks to living a values-driven life and how to overcome them. Trust me, you won't want to miss it!
